Water Damage - Why You Should Act FAST

By: Uri Shalev | Last updated: 7/7/2025

If you’ve recently experienced water damage in your home, you’re likely overwhelmed, stressed, and looking for fast answers. In this post we’ll explain all you need to know about our process and why time is of the essence.

Here’s a cool video that explains why time is critical in water damage incidents:

Post Summary

When water damage strikes, time is critical. Water spreads quickly and often invisibly, seeping into drywall, flooring, and insulation where it can cause mold growth in as little as 24-48 hours. The longer the damage sits, the more extensive (and expensive) the repairs become and the greater the risk that your insurance company may reduce or deny your claim due to delayed mitigation. That’s why we need to get to work fast.

Signing a work authorization form allows us to do exactly that: stop the damage, begin assessing the full scope, and start documenting everything for your insurance claim. It’s not a commitment to unknown costs as it is done with complete transparency, and full control every step of the way.

1. Water Damage Is Often Hidden, and Time is Critical

When it comes to water damage, time isn’t just important – it’s everything. The moment water hits your floors, walls, or ceilings, the clock starts ticking. Moisture spreads fast, soaking into places you can’t see: behind drywall, under floorboards, inside cabinets and insulation. And while the visible mess might seem manageable at first, the real threat is what’s happening out of sight.

Within 24 to 48 hours, mold can begin to form. As the damage expands, so does the cost of fixing it, not to mention the complexity of the cleanup.

But there’s another critical risk most homeowners don’t realize: the longer you wait to take action, the more likely your insurance company is to push back on your claim. Delayed response can be seen as negligence, and that gives insurers grounds to reduce or deny coverage altogether.

2. Understanding the Costs Upfront

One of the most common and understandable questions we hear is: “Can you give me a quote before you start?” The short answer is – not if we’re doing it right.

As we already described earlier – since water damage restoration isn’t like replacing a broken window or fixing a leaky faucet and we can’t see the full extent of the problem from the outside, we’re working blind.

Due to that, try as hard as we might, until we remove affected materials and investigate thoroughly, there’s no honest way to predict the full scope of work.

In fact, any company that claims otherwise is either guessing, making promises they can’t keep, or planning to skip critical steps;

Giving a set price without proper inspection is not just irresponsible, it’s potentially harmful to your property and your insurance claim. Guessing leads to underbidding, which leads to corner-cutting or sudden “surprise” charges mid-project. And worst of all, delays in proper action can give your insurance carrier grounds to reduce or even deny coverage, claiming you didn’t respond quickly enough or failed to mitigate the damage.

That’s why we don’t provide firm pricing up front, and why we ask you to sign a Work Authorization Form before we begin.

What is the Work Authorization form?

Simply put, the work authorization form is permission for us to begin the urgent task of protecting your home and properly documenting the damage.

It authorizes us to inspect, document, and mitigate the damage caused by water or other losses. This includes actions like removing wet materials, setting up drying equipment, and accessing affected areas to assess the full extent of the damage.

We don’t play guessing games with your home or your finances. Our process is thorough, careful, and based on real findings – and that begins the moment you authorize us to start.

The work authorization document is also a great responsibility and we don’t take that lightly. Just because you sign the work authorization doesn’t mean you lose control. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.

You’ll receive full transparency from start to finish. We document everything – with photos, reports, and clear explanations. You’ll be informed of every step we take, and nothing proceeds without your consent.

Think of the form as a green light to start protecting your home, not a blank check. You remain in the driver’s seat the entire time. If we uncover new findings as we go, we’ll share them with you before taking further action. No surprises. No pressure. Just clear communication and full control.

3. How we can help your claim

One of the biggest advantages of working with M&M Restoration is that we don’t just stop the damage – we actually help you navigate the insurance process too.
